In the modern history of Kazakhstan and the post-Soviet republics as a whole, the study of the life and activity of political personalities of the Soviet era takes an important place. Under modern geopolitical conditions the role of historical figures increases many times, because active action or inaction of a person can determine the historical destiny of an entire country and the prospects for its economic and political development for a long historical period. The activity of Erkin Nurzhanovich Auelbekov covers the 50–90’s of the 20th century, when there were important geopolitical changes outside the Soviet Union, at the same time there were inconsistent processes within the country. In the article the author with a survey of new archival and other materials shows the reform opportunities of some Soviet leaders in the spirit of the Kosygin reforms on the example of the life and activity of one of the bright and interesting representatives of the Soviet governing establishment, Erkin Nurzhanovich Auelbekov.
